The Tokyo metropolitan government said Tuesday it has confirmed 78 new cases of coronavirus infections, surpassing the record of daily confirmations of 68 set Sunday. The total number of virus infections in Tokyo has reached 521.
On Tuesday, the total number of infections confirmed nationwide -- excluding the cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship -- surpassed 2,000.
Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike told reporters on the day: "We are now seeing infections among young people. It's very worrisome, because we are still at a crucial point of the infection explosion."
