Seventy-six percent of freshmen who enrolled at universities and junior colleges this April attended entrance ceremonies with their parents, according to a survey by the National Federation of University Co-operative Associations.
The percentage of students accompanied by their parents has been on the rise since the survey started in 2008, except for a decrease due to the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The association, based in Tokyo, said unlike a decade ago, parents think it natural to accompany their children for this occasion.
The survey was conducted between April and May this year of parents of freshmen who entered national, public and private universities and junior colleges nationwide, with 21,531 responding.
About 97.7 percent of freshmen attended entrance ceremonies, and 75.9 percent of them were accompanied by their parents. When asked about the attributes of those who attended with them (multiple answers were allowed), mothers accounted for the largest share at 71.4 percent, followed by fathers at 30.8 percent, The percentage for both a father and mother attending was 27.7 percent, while that for grandparents was 4.6 percent.
