With a lack of new films being released due to the pandemic, Amazon Prime Video has just unveiled a new thriller that’s getting a lot of buzz.
Titled 7500, the film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (in his first role in four years) as a pilot forced to fend off terrorists mid-flight.
It’s been described as a “claustrophobic potboiler” and, while the reviews have ranged from two to four stars, it’s being called a worthy way to spend 90 minutes.
Gordon-Levitt announced the film’s release on Twitter, writing: “First movie I’ve come out in since 2016! Took some time off when I had kids, and for my first acting job back, I really wanted to find a unique creative challenge.”
The main criticism being levelled against the film is its clichéd depiction of terrorists.
Film journalist Amon Warmann wrote: “I was very disappointed by its decision to have the bad guys be Muslim terrorists. That’s a negative stereotype we don’t ever need to see on screen ever again.”
Hannah Wales of CoverMediaNews added: “Agreed! And what’s worse is they are given no depth or barely any motive! They are literally a shallow stereotype. Not cool.”
Film Stories editor Simon Brew wrote: “For 60 minutes, that film had me utterly gripped. And then out came Hollywood Cliché Muslim Terrorists from decades ago and I had to apologise to my eldest for my out-loud WTF.”
Director Richard Shepard (Netflix film The Perfection) also highlighted the “terrorist clichés”, but levelled that “the filmmaking is first rate” and called the film “riveting” and “tense”.
7500 – from director Patrick Vollbrath – is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video now.
