71.95% voting in Punjab; over 80% in 11 Malwa seats

CHANDIGARH: Punjab recorded 71.95% turnout on Sunday for its 2022 assembly polls, a drop of 6.25% compared to 78.2% in the 2017 state elections. The state election commission released the final voting figures late on Monday evening. Punjab chief electoral officer S Karuna Raju said out of over 1.54 crore people who cast their votes on Sunday, 81.33 lakh were males, 73.35 lakh females and 282 transgenders.

Gidderbaha in Bathinda had the highest polling percentage of 84.93%, followed by Talwandi Sabo (83.70%) and Sardulgarh (83.64%). Interestingly, 11 assembly segments that recorded turnout at or over 80% are either rural or semi-urban seats and belong to Punjab’s Malwa region.

Amritsar West (55.40%), Ludhiana South (59.04%) and Amritsar Central (59.19%) witnessed the lowest polling percentage among the 23 districts of the state. In Majha the urban-rural divide was seen as rural areas recorded turnout over 70%. In Doaba region, the turnout was the lowest in Jalandhar Central (60.65%) and the highest in Balachaur (73.77%).
