700 new Covid-19 cases but infection rate drops - the Leeds stats you need to know

Leeds has recorded 781 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the city's total to 17,659.

While cases have continued to increase over the past few days, Leeds has actually seen a drop in its infection rate.

Speculation persists over whether Leeds and West Yorkshire will be subject to additional restrictions.

Elsewhere in Yorkshire, a further 3,958 people have tested positive for the disease.

This means that 94,444 cases of Covid-19 have been reported in Yorkshire since the start of the pandemic.

Sadly, 2,805 people who tested positive for the virus have so far died in our county's hospitals.

Leeds' death toll stands at 366 with no coronavirus-related deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In England, a further 94 people, who tested positive for Covid-19 have died, figures from the last 24 hours show.

Of those deaths, 18 were recorded in Yorkshire.

Newly confirmed cases of coronavirus in Yorkshire over the past 24 hours:

  • Leeds - was 16,878 now 17,659 (+781)

  • Wakefield – was 5,269 now 5,525 (+256)

  • North Yorkshire - was 6,134 now 6,341 (+207)

  • Sheffield - was 13,400 now 13,951 (+551)

  • Barnsley - was 4,668 now 4,932 (+264)

  • Bradford - was 14,470 now 14,927 (+457)

  • Calderdale - was 3,274 now 3,452 (+178)

  • Rotherham - was 5,063 now 5,289 (+226)

  • Kirklees - was 7,705 now 8,032 (+327)

  • York - was 2,874 now 3,016 (+142)

  • Doncaster - was 4,674 now 4,957 (+283)

  • East Yorkshire - was 3,443 now 3,588 (+145)

  • Hull - was 2,634 now 2,775 (+141)

18 deaths recorded in Yorkshire hospitals

A further 18 patients who tested positive for Covid-19 have died in Yorkshire hospitals, figures from the past 24 hours show.

This is the highest number of coronavirus-related deaths in the county since June 17.

Across England a further 94 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in hospital, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths reported in hospitals to 31,275.

Patients were aged between 49 and 97.

All but one, aged 71, had known underlying health conditions.

The deaths were between October 14 and 20.

Yorkshire infection rates

Five areas in Yorkshire have seen their infection rates drop.

Sheffield, which will go into Tier 3 from Saturday, has seen its rate drop to 412.4 cases per 100,000 in the seven days to October 17.

In that period 2,412 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Sheffield.

While Leeds has recorded significantly more cases than any other area in the seven days to October 17, the city's infection rate has dropped as well.

It now stands at 382.5 cases per 100,000 - down from 405.2 the week before.

Craven, Hambleton and Scarborough also saw their infection rates drop.

The figures, for the seven days to October 17, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Data for the most recent four days (October 18-21) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency and is based on Public Health England data published on October 21 on the government’s coronavirus dashboard.
