70 new homes could be on their way to central Gateshead if fresh plans are given the go-ahead

Dozens of new homes could be coming to Gateshead if plans to build on a former sports field are given the go-ahead.

Vistry Partnerships North are behind proposals to build 70 affordable homes on the former site of North Durham Sports Ground.

If the proposals are given the go-ahead, a mixture of two, three and four bedroom houses will be built on the Prince Consort Road site.

A design and access statement lodged with the authority said the homes would be “high quality”.

It said: “The development will provide high quality affordable homes that meet local demand and local authority requirements, whilst also providing an integrated and sustainable neighbourhood that responds to, and enhances the surrounding context and character.

“The scheme’s impact upon and relationship with the local area has been fully considered, and relevant consultants have been engaged with in order to create a development that is beneficial to both the residents and the wider community.”

The developer also stated that the project would deliver the housing needed by the borough, saying it is in an “excellent” location.

It continued: “Located within an existing residential area, and with excellent access to transport and services the site offers an excellent location for the development of high quality affordable housing in the heart of Gateshead.”

The document said that the new estate would blend in with existing housing and improve biodiversity in the area.

It added: “The proposed design integrates the development well with existing neighbouring residential developments and makes the most of the existing vegetation to provide visual amenity for residents and to enhance biodiversity on site alongside the development of green publicly accessible open space.

“The proposals will deliver a significant number of affordable homes addressing a local need.”

Gateshead Council is expected to decide on the application in January.
