Boy, 7, trapped in a stolen car found after knocking on the door of a home in Perth's east

A seven-year-old boy who was in his family's car when it was stolen in Perth last night has been found after knocking on the front door of a home 20 kilometres away.

Joseph Eaton was reported missing shortly after 8:30pm, when the car was taken from the family's home in the north-eastern suburb of Morley.

Officers spent the night searching for the boy as the temperature neared 10 degrees, but failed to find any sign of him.

Just after 5:45am, the boy woke up in the back of the car, which had been dumped in Forrestfield, and knocked on the front door of a nearby house.

The homeowners then called police, who collected Joseph and took him to the local police station.

"Joseph was collected a short time later from the station by his mother and is now safe and well, and with family," the spokesperson said.

"Further inquiries will be conducted to determine who stole the vehicle, and how it came to be at the home."

'It happened so quickly': Mother

Joseph's mother, Rose Hsieh, said she spent the night worrying about her missing son and praying for his safety, describing it as a big relief to have him home.

She said Joseph's younger brother had been sick in the car on their way home last night, so she took him into the house first, thinking Joseph would follow her.

"It happened so quickly. I just heard something was very noisy outside … I ran out and had a look but my car was not here.

"So I was really worried. I just saying: 'What is going on?'"

"I didn't see the car and I didn't see him.

"I ran outside to have a look, and I said: 'Where's my car, where's Joseph, I say Joe, Joe, where are you?'

"I ran outside, I wanted to make sure this was not dream and have a look again."

Ms Hsieh thanked everyone involved in looking for Joseph, describing it as a good outcome.

Joseph said he woke up briefly in the car outside his home, before going back to sleep, thinking his mother was coming back to get him.

He said he was scared when he woke up again, and thanked the police for their efforts.
