1. Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo is a lifesaver for refreshing hair between washes, but relying on it daily can be harmful to your scalp. The powders and starches in dry shampoo absorb oil, but they do not clean your hair. Overuse can lead to a buildup of product on the scalp, clogging hair follicles, causing irritation, and potentially even contributing to hair loss or breakage.
2. Harsh Facial Scrubs
Exfoliating is important for removing dead skin cells, but using a harsh physical scrub with large, jagged particles every day is a recipe for disaster. Scrubs made with crushed nuts or fruit pits can create micro-tears in the skin, damaging the protective skin barrier. This can lead to redness, inflammation, and increased sensitivity, so you should limit exfoliation to once or twice a week with a gentle product.
3. Makeup Wipes
Makeup wipes are convenient for a quick removal at the end of the day, but they should not be your only cleansing method. Most wipes contain preservatives and surfactants that can be irritating to the skin if not rinsed off. More importantly, they primarily smear makeup, dirt, and oil around your face rather than truly removing it, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts over time.
4. Clarifying Shampoos
Clarifying shampoos are formulated to deep clean and remove product buildup from your hair and scalp. While effective for an occasional “reset,” using them daily can be extremely harsh. They can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry, brittle, and prone to damage. You should only use a clarifying shampoo about once a month, or as needed, not as your regular shampoo.
5. Antibacterial Hand Soaps
During the pandemic, many people switched to using antibacterial soaps for everything. However, the FDA has stated there is not enough evidence to show that these soaps are any better at preventing illness than regular soap and water. Daily, long-term use of antibacterial agents like triclosan can disrupt your skin’s natural microbiome and may contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
6. Pore Strips

Pulling a pore strip off your nose and seeing the “gunk” it removed can be incredibly satisfying. However, using these strips too often can damage your skin. The strong adhesive can irritate sensitive skin, break capillaries, and even enlarge your pores over time by stretching them out. You should use them sparingly, if at all.
7. High-Proof Alcohol Toners
Toners from past decades were often loaded with alcohol to give oily skin that “squeaky clean” feeling. While these products are less common now, some toners still contain high concentrations of alcohol. Using these daily can strip the skin of its natural moisture, causing it to become dehydrated and irritated, which can ironically lead to an overproduction of oil as your skin tries to compensate.
Moderation Is Key
The lesson from these products is that more is not always better. A healthy personal care routine is about balance and understanding what your body truly needs. By using these stronger, targeted products only when necessary and relying on gentle, nourishing products for daily use, you can avoid irritation and achieve your health and beauty goals without causing unintended harm.
