BALTIMORE — Seven people were shot, one fatally, in Baltimore in two incidents within an hour of each other Friday afternoon, police said, coming as the city grapples with pervasive violence.
Patrol officers assigned to the department’s Eastern District station received a ShotSpotter gunshot detection system alert around noon, Baltimore Police spokeswoman Detective Nicole Monroe said in a statement.
The gunshots were traced to the area near the intersection of E. North Avenue and N. Washington Street, just south of Clifton Park.
Officers found three men with gunshot wounds in the 1800 block of N. Castle St. in the Broadway East neighborhood. Monroe said the men were 19, 32 and 44 years old.
More than 20 orange cones and yellow evidence markers surrounded the shooting scene. A basketball hoop lay on the ground. A pair of sneakers, a T-shirt and a jacket were on the sidewalk.
All of the victims were taken to hospitals for treatment, while Eastern District shooting detectives began to investigate, Monroe said.
The city’s ShotSpotter system identified more gunshots around 12:57 p.m., directing officers to the 600 block of Laurens St. — adjacent to Upton Station.
Monroe said officers found three people who had been shot, and a fourth victim walked into an area hospital for treatment.
One of the victims, whose identity was still unknown, died at an area hospital, police said. One of the victims, age 50, is in critical condition; the others, ages 50 and 18, suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.
The department’s Central District assumed the investigation, Monroe said.
