7 peaceful walks in Liverpool now that we can go out more

After being cooped up inside for almost nine weeks, we’re all looking forward to getting out of the house for our daily exercise more than ever.

Now that coronavirus lockdown restrictions have been lifted somewhat, we can actually head out for exercise as many times a day as we want, so why not make the most of Liverpool’s incredible walking paths and parks?

Just make sure you follow social-distancing rules and stay safe.

Whether you’re in the city centre and want to take in the waterfront or you’re tucked away in the suburbs surrounded by greenery, here’s a few places to take a peaceful stroll in Liverpool.

What better place to start than Liverpool’s world famous waterfront?

Starting at the cruise terminal, with the River Mersey on your right, you can walk along the waterfront and take in the famous Three Graces and the historic Albert Dock, as well as the infamous Beatles statue.

When you reach the M&S Bank Arena, you can either keep your walk going, or cut inland towards Liverpool ONE.

Otterspool

Otterspool Promenade is always popular for taking a leisurely stroll, boasting great views of the Wirral and the River Mersey.

The wind from the Mersey can be brisk at this time of year, so be sure to wrap up if its a windy day.

You can take a walk along the promenade and back, or head a little further along Riverside Drive.

Sefton Park

Liverpool’s largest green space is the perfect setting for a lazy afternoon stroll.

You’ll often see joggers using the perimeter of Sefton Park for their run, but if you’re not feeling that energetic, you can take it more slowly.

Whether you stick to the perimeter, or cut in to enjoy the boating lake and the Palm House, once you’re done you can head to nearby Lark Lane to continue your walk.

Croxteth Country Park

You can enjoy a peaceful stroll in this beautiful country park, surrounded by magnificent woodland, grazing livestock and traditional cottages.

The landscape here has changed little in over a century. Miles of paths throughout the 400 acre park allow you to escape for a breath of fresh air.

There is plenty to see at Croxteth Hall from a working farm to some gorgeous flowers in the Victorian walled garden.

You can also check out the local wildlife and explore woodlands, pastures and ponds in Croxteth Local Nature Reserve.

Woolton Woods and Camp Hill

Anyone fancying a gentle walk can discover the pathways of this beautiful and historic park.

Start at the High street near Woolton Village and follow the sloping paths. The park boasts the lovely walled garden, delightful woodlands and magnificent views from camp hill (formerly a bronze age encampment).

Waterloo to Hightown

This walk from Waterloo to Hightown , following the Sefton Coastal Path, is about 4½ miles (7½ km) in length.

It begins at Marine Cresent in Waterloo, with its beautiful waterfront houses, passing the Crosby Marine Lake and Promenade, and finishes at the village of Hightown.

The route is not circular, but is conveniently located for using the frequent trains between Hightown and Waterloo. The way is on hard surfaces, good tracks and over sand dunes, so any sensible shoes will be fine.

Festival Gardens

Festival Gardens is a beautiful tranquil space with oriental gardens, pagodas, lakes, waterways and waterfalls.

Look out in the gardens for two restored pagodas, the restored Moon Wall, new lakes, waterways and waterfalls and a new pedestrianised area linking to the promenade.
