But just because a brand is well-known doesn’t mean it’s worth the cost—or even that it’s delivering what it promises. In fact, some of the most familiar names are overrated brands that coast on reputation while offering average or even subpar products. Let’s take a closer look at seven brands that might not be living up to the hype.

1. Starbucks

Starbucks has built a coffee empire on branding, ambiance, and convenience—but when it comes to taste and value, many say it falls short. Critics argue that the coffee is often over-roasted, leading to a burnt flavor that’s masked with syrups and sugar. Meanwhile, smaller local cafes are offering better quality beans and more personalized service for less. The high prices and long wait times don’t always justify the product. While Starbucks isn’t going anywhere soon, it’s clearly one of the overrated brands when it comes to actual coffee quality.

2. Apple

There’s no denying that Apple has mastered the art of design and marketing, but some customers feel the innovation has slowed. New iPhones come out every year with minimal upgrades, while older models become sluggish thanks to updates that strain performance. Apple accessories like chargers and headphones are notoriously overpriced, and the lack of compatibility with non-Apple products can be frustrating. 3. UGG

UGG boots exploded in popularity for their cozy look and feel, but some customers say the quality doesn’t match the price tag. Knockoff versions offer nearly the same style and comfort at a fraction of the cost. Plus, in warmer climates, they’re almost entirely impractical. 4. Supreme

Streetwear fans may line up around the block for Supreme drops, but many consumers outside that culture are scratching their heads. Simple t-shirts and hoodies with a small logo sell for hundreds—solely because of the brand’s limited-release strategy. The actual quality of the clothing is often compared to standard department store brands. Critics argue that the hype is manufactured and the resale culture fuels artificial demand. When a brick with a logo sells out in minutes, you know you’re dealing with one of the most overrated brands in fashion.

5. Fiji Water

Fiji markets itself as a premium bottled water brand, but blind taste tests show most people can’t tell the difference between it and standard tap water. The square bottle and exotic branding play a big role in its perceived value, even though it’s just water sourced from an aquifer in Fiji. Environmental critics have also slammed the brand for unnecessary plastic waste and long shipping routes. While it’s aesthetically pleasing, it may not be the smartest buy. In terms of substance, Fiji Water is often called out as an overrated brand.

6. Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie was once the gold standard of mall fashion, but its heyday came with heavy branding, controversial marketing, and overpriced basics. The company’s exclusionary image and lack of size inclusivity led to significant customer backlash in the early 2010s. Although they’ve made efforts to rebrand in recent years, some shoppers still find the quality of the clothing to be inconsistent. Many argue that you’re paying for the label, not the longevity of the item. Abercrombie remains an overrated brand trying to reclaim relevance.

7. Keurig

The convenience of a Keurig machine is undeniable—but that convenience comes at a cost to flavor, sustainability, and your wallet. Many coffee lovers agree that pod-based brewing sacrifices richness and aroma for speed. The single-use pods also generate a large amount of plastic waste unless you’re using recyclable or refillable options. Plus, the machines themselves can be pricey and prone to malfunctions. Keurig may be a household name, but it’s often cited as one of the most overrated brands in home brewing.

Don’t Let Branding Blind You

Marketing is powerful—it can make us believe a brand is better simply because it’s familiar or expensive. But when you look past the packaging and celebrity endorsements, many of these overrated brands don’t justify their reputations.
