7 Most Powerful Female Comic Book Sorceresses and Witches

Comic book witches and sorceresses are a dime a dozen in the comic books, if you go back decades. However, most are not well-known or popular. Some even have the same name and appear at different publishers. While you may know the name Scarlet Witch, there are many more comic book witches and sorceresses you know nothing about. Here are seven you should know.

1. Scarlet Witch

Elizabeth Olsen’s portrayal of the character in the MCU has made Scarlet Witch a household name. However, the comic book version of Wanda Maximoff is much more powerful and sometimes scarier.

Scarlet Witch made her debut in The X-Men #4 in March 1964. The character was basically a caricature of a Romani or Gypsy witch of the era. The character’s origin changed multiple times over the decades. She became a mutant, then a genetically modified human, and then back to a Romani-born witch.

Scarlet Witch is one of the most powerful comic book witches. She can fly, cast spells, and use telekinesis. She has the power to tap into Chaos Magic and alter reality to her will. Scarlet Witch once said, “No more mutants,” and almost 99% of mutants disappeared from Earth.

House of M is an 8-issue 2005 series showing the consequences of Scarlet Witch warping reality and erasing mutants from the Earth. This 1,299-page hardcover also collects tie-in comics from the era. Buy it for $39.99 at Amazon now.

2. Amora the Enchantress (Marvel)

Technically, there are two characters known as Enchantress in Marvel Comic books. Amora the Enchantress made her debut with Journey into Mystery #103 in 1964. She was a sorceress apprentice of Queen Karnilla and learns her skills of mysticism, magic, deception, and wily seduction at a young age. In her first comic book appearance, Odin banishes Thor to Earth to humble him, but Thor falls in love with Jane Foster.

Odin commands Amora to tempt and trick Thor to break his attraction to Jane. Before the MCU, Enchantress was a regular Thor feature; she would tempt and trick many Asgardians into playing her games or executing her plans.

In Avengers Prime from 2010, Asgard is in ruins after a battle. Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America are at odds. And Amora the Enchantress is promising retribution against Thor.

3. Sylvie the Enchantress (Marvel)

In the comic books, Sylvie Lushton is basically a younger version of Amora the Enchantress. However, she was taught her powers of mysticism and deception by Loki. Sylvie, desperate to join the Young Avengers, controls their minds to sway their favor. Sophia Di Martino portrays a more powerful version of this character on the Disney+ streaming show Loki. Sylvie made her debut in Dark Reign: Young Avengers #1 in 2009.

The 120-page Dark Reign: Young Avengers is only $8.99 on Kindle now.

4. Dr. June Moone Enchantress (DC)

DC Comics’ Enchantress Dr. June Moone in Strange Adventures #187 in 1966. She is one of the most powerful comic book witches out there. However, most people only know the character from Cara Delevingne’s portrayal of the character in 2016’s Suicide Squad. While exploring a castle, an ancient spirit possesses Dr. June Moone. She can now transform into Enchantress by saying the name.

Enchantress has ancient knowledge of black magic and can remotely control the magic of others. In the first issues of the Justice League Dark The New 52 Omnibus, Enchantress separates from Dr. Moone and goes insane. Get this 1,624-page hardcover for $126 now at Amazon

5. Shuri

Letitia Wright portrays Shuri in the MCU, and you are probably familiar with the character. You may not know that the character is also one of the most powerful comic book witches in Marvel. Along with being a scientific genius, Shuri is also a master of mysticism. She can transform her body into a flock of birds or a tough stone-like material.

Black Panther: Shuri: The Deadliest of the Species is a 144-page hardcover that depicts the events leading up to Doomwar when Dr. Doom invades Wakanda and Shuri becomes Black Panther. Buy the hardcover for $17.99.

6. Zatanna

Zatanna is one of the most powerful comic book witches in DC Comics, but is virtually unknown to casual readers and normies. The Great Zatanna Zatara is a stage magician and even wears a magician’s outfit as a uniform. However, she is really the descendent of powerful sorcerers and a seperate branch of the human race, Homo magi. She is innately able to tap into magic relative to a regular human. The character made her debut in Hawkman #4 in 1964.

Zatanna: Bring Down the House is a 176-page hardcover. After a tragic mistake, Zatanna stops using her powers and becomes a regular magician until a threat emerges that forces her back to her old ways. Buy it for $21.32 at Amazon now.

7. Raven

Raven, real name and code name, made her debut in DC Comics Presents #26 in 1980. She is one of the most powerful comic book witches by birthright because her mother is human, and her father is the powerful demon Trigon. The character is popular in cartoons, video games, and streaming shows due to her membership in the Teen Titans, but most casual readers don’t know her true power in the comic books.

Raven has enhanced empathy and can instantly feel what others are feeling. She can also manipulate emotions, read minds, and travel to other dimensions.

Titans 1: Out of the Shadows is a 144-page paperback that collects the first 5 issues of 2023’s Titans. The world believes the Justice League is dead, and the Titans are now the premier superteam defending Earth. Buy it for $13.00 at Amazon now.

Comic Book Witches

There are plenty of other witches I need to include in this series, but they are not as popular or well-known. The definition of a “witch” changes depending on the character. Some become witches due to learning and practicing the dark arts. Others, like Raven or Zatanna, are born with such gifts. One thing is certain: witches certainly make for amazing comic book entertainment.
