1. Seashell House, Mexico

(Airbnb/Seashell House)

The iconic Seashell House is basically the perfect excuse to live out your mermaid dreams.

Located on the coast of Isla Mujeres in Mexico, the whole house is filled with seashell furniture, mermaid artwork and a huge outdoor pool with fish-shaped decor.

2. Copenhagen

The Little Mermaid statue is one of Copenhagen's most iconic landmarks, and can be found in the city's harbour. It's nothing to do with the Disney film (read on for a break that is), but rather a tribute to the original Hans Christian Andersen fairytale.

Meanwhile, there's plenty more to explore in Copenhagen from the colourful Nyhavn Harbour to the picturesque Tivoli Gardens.

3. Walt Disney World

The Magic Kingdom park is where you'll find a celebration of all things Ariel.

Under the Sea - Journey of the Little Mermaid is a gentle ride where you can explore the iconic Disney film while sitting in a cosy clam shell, heading under the sea with Ariel and her friends.

Heading to California instead? There is a similar ride in Disney's California Adventure Park in Anaheim.

Then of course the Disney parks offer heaps of nods to the Disney princess, from her parade appearances to character meet and greets.

4. Warsaw, Poland

It's not a famous mermaid destination - but the Mermaid of Warsaw appears on the city's coat of arms, and there are plenty of statues and tributes to be found throughout the city.

Head to the picturesque Old Town Square where amidst the breathtaking architecture, bustling restaurants and markets, you'll find a large statue of the Mermaid.

The legend goes that the mermaid came from the Baltic Sea and meddled with fishermen's nets to free the fish - they tried to catch her, but when they heard her song, they decided to live harmoniously alongside the siren. When a rich merchant captured her and tried to keep her as a prize, they helped free her - to thank them, she became the city's protector.

5. Scottish Highlands

Head to the shores of Moray Firth in Balintore and you'll find the Mermaid of the North, perching on the Black Rock.

The statue was originally made by wood and resin, but was eventually replaced with an identical bronze version which could withstand the stormy weather and crashing waves.

Legend has it that a fisherman once stole a beautiful mermaid and hid her tail. Years later, after the pair had children, she found her tail and escaped back to the sea, but still returned regularly to feed her hungry children.

6. Coney Island, the USA

Every summer, Coney Island in NYC is transformed into a mermaid extravaganza with hundreds of participants donning their best mermaid and sea creature costumes.

The Mermaid Parade began in 1983 and acts as a tribute to the former Coney Island Mardi Gras celebrations.

Whether you want to take part or just be a spectator, you can find out more about the event on the official website.

7. Weeki Wachee Springs State Park

This state park in Florida is renowned for its live mermaid shows.

The mermaids dive into the freshwater caves and put on a show for the spectators sitting within the special viewing structures. It makes for quite a magical experience - and it's become a firm favourite with locals and visitors.

The park has plenty of fun splash zones and freshwater offerings so there's ample opportunity for adventure - including kayak trips.
