7 injured after taxi crashes against building in South Shore

April 01--Fire officials said seven people, including children, were injured after a taxi crashed against an apartment building in the South Shore neighborhood Friday afternoon.

Chicago Fire Department officials sent multiple ambulances to the scene about 2:30 p.m. after the taxi crashed in the 7100 block of South Yates Boulevard, according to the Fire Department's news office.

Five of the injured were children, who were in the taxi at the time of the crash. They were taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized.

The male driver was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, in serious-to-critical condition, according to fire officials. He suffered multiple fractures to his leg, officials said.

A woman was taken to Trinity Hospital in serious-to-critical condition but her injuries were not considered life-threatening.

According to fire officials, the taxi was traveling north on Yates when it collided with another vehicle. The crash sent the taxi into southbound traffic, where it traveled over a sidewalk and over a fence before hitting the building.

While the taxi did not go into the aparment building, it damaged the building's facade. No pedestrians were injured in the incident.
