Most NFL mock drafts that we’ve seen over the past couple of months have had 2-3 Georgia football players going in the first round.
However, in CBS Sports’ most recent 7-round mock draft, the outlet has just one Dawg taken in the first round, and that’s left tackle Andrew Thomas.
Analyst Chris Trapasso projects the New York Jets to take Thomas with the No. 11 overall pick in the NFL Draft, which is currently scheduled for April 23 in Las Vegas.
On Thomas, Trapasso wrote:
Jets GM Joe Douglas knows how vital an offensive line is after his time in Philadelphia. Thomas was outstanding the two seasons at Georgia and has length for days.
Trapasso has Thomas ranked as the 15th overall player in the draft class and 4th ranked offensive tackle.
In total, Trapasso has seven Georgia players going in the draft.
Round 2:
In the second round, Trapasso has two Georgia players taken off the board.
With the 29th pick in the second round, and 61st pick overall, he has Georgia right tackle Isaiah Wilson headed to the Tennessee Titans.
Wilson’s draft stock has been on the rise after an impressive NFL Combine.
Trapasso has the 6-foot-7, 350 pounder ranked as the draft’s 51st overall prospect and 8th ranked offensive tackle.
On Wilson, Trapasso wrote:
With Jack Conklin unlikely to be re-signed in free agency, Tennessee picks a road-grader at right tackle in Wilson.
Later in round 2, Georgia running back D’Andre Swift gets taken by the Kansas City Chiefs with the second-to-last pick of the round.
Many analyst do see the Chiefs getting Swift, however, most have him going to Kansas City at the end of the first round as opposed to the second.
Swift ranks as the 41st overall prospect in the draft and 2nd ranked running back, yet is still projected to be taken at 63 overall.
Swift’s versatility with and without the ball in his hands is what makes him so special compared to other tailbacks. Not only can he run you over, but he can blow past you with his speed and he has one of the nastiest arsenals of jukes, spins and cuts that you’ll see from a college running back. But what really sets him apart is his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and make things happen. It’s something that Georgia fans may not be too familiar with — and that’s not because Swift could not do it, but because the coaches would not cut #7 loose and let him.
On Swift, Trapasso wrote:
Oh boy. Andy Reid getting the pass-catching stud D’Andre Swift is a nightmare for defenses.
Following Georgia’s three players taken in the first two rounds, Trapasso projects another four to go from rounds 3-7.
Round 3
In round three, Trapasso has Jake Fromm going to the Tampa Bay Bucs with the 12th pick of the round (76 overall).
Viewed as the 6th ranked quarterback and 115th overall prospect, Fromm struggled in his final season at Georgia and did not have the best showing at the NFL Combine.
On Fromm, Trapasso wrote:
Bruce Arians likes the smarts and big-game experience Fromm brings along with his deceptive production down the field earlier in his Georgia career.
Fromm is up and down on NFL Draft boards, much like his 2019 season at the University of Georgia. His 5.01 second forty yard dash isn’t going to boost or hurt his draft stock.
Fromm has athleticism, but it definitely isn’t in the top tier for the NFL Draft’s quarterback class of 2020. According to ESPN NFL analyst Louis Riddick, Jake Fromm has ‘flashes’ of brilliance and can throw the back-shoulder fade as well as anybody, but Riddick is concerned about Fromm’s consistency:
Round 4
With the 19th pick in the fourth round (125 overall), Georgia offensive guard Solomon Kindley goes to the New England Patriots.
Kindley, a monster of a man at 6-foot-3, 337 pounds, would join fellow Bulldogs David Andrews, Isaiah Wynn and Sony Michel on New England’s offense.
Could you imagine three Bulldogs starting on the same offensive line opening up holes for the school’s third all-time leading rusher?
On Kindley, Trapasso wrote:
Kindley is a people-mover on the inside who can be beaten by counter moves on pass plays but when he can sink his anchor, it’s over.
Next: Rounds 5-6
Round 5
Getting closer to the end of the draft, Georgia safety J.R. Reed finally hears his name called with the 156th overall pick.
Reed is projected to go to the San Francisco 49ers.
Viewed as the 10th best safety in this class, he played like a top-five guy during his years in Athens.
On Reed, Trapasso wrote:
Reed has NFL bloodlines and was a consistent performer on the back end during his Georgia career.
Round 6
With the 24th pick in the 6th round of the NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints take Georgia defensive tackle Tyler Clark.
On Clark, Trapasso wrote:
Clark won’t move the needle with splash plays, but he’s not a major liability in any area. Ideal defensive line depth at this junction of the draft.
