Oct. 29--A convenience store clerk said he was stabbed in the head after chasing down a man who took several pairs of gloves from a Loop store Wednesday morning.
"I just wanted my gloves back," said the 7-Eleven clerk, a 24-year-old West Sider who didn't want his name used.
About 7 a.m. a man walked in and took about 15 pairs of gloves and put them in a bag, said the clerk who was by himself working the register at the 7-Eleven, 174 N. Michigan Ave.
"I have to stop him,'' the clerk said he was thinking as he sprinted after the man and grabbed him. The clerk was able to snatch the bag from him but was stabbed in the head with a box cutter.
"I pulled the bag he got and I actually let him go after I got stabbed,'' the employee said.
The clerk didn't realize he was injured until he went back inside the store and a customer told him he was bleeding.
The man was not badly injured but suffered a small laceration, and was planning to go to a hospital after a co-worker got to the store to relieve him.
"Shoplifting happens all the time but this kind of thing (stabbing) is kind of rare,'' the clerk said.
Police said they are still looking for the thief. A detailed description of the suspect was not available but police are reviewing video surveillance.
