7 dead, 80 missing due to landslide in Indonesia's West Java province

A landslide in Indonesia's West Java Province claimed 7 lives, while 82 remain missing, said BNPB, Indonesia's disaster agency. The landslide triggered by heavy rain hit West Bandung Regency at 2am local time on Saturday, local media reported. The rescue and search operation for the affected is underway.

"A landslide occurred in West Bandung Regency, West Java Province, in the early hours of Saturday, killing seven people," AFP quoted Abdul Muhari, a spokesman for the national disaster agency or BNPB. He further added, "The number of missing persons is high, we will try to optimise our search and rescue efforts today," reported Reuters.

Mohari added, "This disaster has affected around 34 families, or 113 people, while the number of affected houses is still being recorded by officers in the field," according to Kompas.

As per the report, the regional disaster agency has conducted a rapid assessment and an initial assessment, while also deploying personnel for emergency response and searching for victims at the scene.

"The regional disaster management agency, along with joint agencies, is still conducting further data collection and monitoring at the affected locations, including the process of searching for victims and assessing emergency needs," Muhari added.

The region is under high alert for floods, flash floods, extreme weather, and landslides till April 30.
