7 Cuban migrants come ashore near South Florida park

MIAMI — Seven Cuban migrants landed near Matheson Hammock park in Miami-Dade County on Monday night, according to the U.S. Border Patrol.

Details about the landing were still pending Tuesday afternoon, but the Border Patrol said in a statement that they came ashore on a homemade boat.

Matheson Hammock is a county-run park off Old Cutler Road that extends into Biscayne Bay.

The landing is the latest in a marked increase in migrant arrivals in South Florida — mainly from Cuba, but also from Haiti — that started more than a year ago.

Experts on Cuba and Haiti say the trend is due to deteriorating political, economic and health conditions in both nations.
