7 bonfire safety tips you must know - the do's and don'ts

There is no such thing as a completely safe bonfire - however, there are a few ways to minimise the risks that might arise on or around November 5.

Talk to any neighbours before hosting a bonfire night and be careful what materials are used in the bonfire.

Also, don’t forget once the bonfire has died down, spray the embers with water to stop it reigniting.

Here are seven bonfire safety tips you must know if it’s your first time hosting a bonfire night or you just need a reminder.

Build your bonfire well clear of buildings, garden sheds, fences and hedges

Making sure the bonfire is well clear from buildings and people is essential.

Safe spectator distances are usually recommended with fireworks. You should make sure your attendees keep their distance. Consider using tape or something similar as a barrier to prevent anyone from getting too close.

Never use flammable liquids to start a bonfire

This can be incredibly dangerous and cause you to quickly lose control of the fire, making it much harder to extinguish.

Never burn dangerous items such as aerosol cans, paint tins, foam-filled furniture or batteries

This one goes without saying.

Don’t leave bonfires unattended

An adult should supervise it until it has burned out. If it has to be left, damp it down with plenty of water.

Children must always be kept away from fires and fireworks. If you’re hosting a larger event, you should consider how the crowd will need to be controlled and kept safe.

Always keep a bucket of water or a hosepipe nearby in case of fire

If someone is hurt, make sure at least one person knows how to treat minor burns, just in case. Remember you must always call the emergency services immediately if things are beyond your level of skill.

Check the weather - avoid lighting bonfires in high winds

You don’t want the bonfire to spread and cause damage.

Avoid alcohol

You want to make sure you’re not under the influence of alcohol when dealing with fireworks and bonfires.

Also, keep alcohol well away from fireworks and bonfires as it will immediately catch fire.
