7.1 earthquake postpones Zion Williamson’s NBA Summer League debut

Zion Williamson made his NBA Summer League debut in Las Vegas on Friday and while there were times he looked lost, he still put on a show for the crowd at the Thomas & Mack Center. Unfortunately, Williamson’s debut was cut short due to a 7.1 earthquake in Ridgecrest, CA.

Here is the explanation as to why all of Friday night’s games were cancelled via NBA.com:

The primary issue at Summer League was the arena’s overhead scoreboard, which is suspended from the roof by cables and swayed noticeably when the quake hit. A game between Phoenix and Denver, scheduled for later Friday in the Thomas & Mack, was also cancelled — while a game in the adjacent Cox Pavilion, which does not have an overhead scoreboard, was also halted and later cancelled for precautionary reasons.

“Safety comes first, second, third,” Summer League executive director Warren LeGarie said.

Williamson ended the game with 11 points on 44.4 percent shooting from the field and three rebounds. Second-year guard Frank Jackson led all scorers with 30 points on 11-17 shooting from the field, including 5-9 shooting from behind the arc.

The Pelicans are scheduled to play on Saturday against the Washington Wizards at the Thomas & Mack Center. Tip-off will be at 7 p.m. and the game will be aired on ESPN.
