684 more coronavirus deaths in UK as total now over 3,600

Over 3,600 people have died from coronavirus in the UK, as 684 more deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours.

The latest update from the Department of Health reported that as of 5pm on 2 April, of those hospitalised in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus, 3,605 have sadly died.

This is an increase of 684 on yesterday's total.

As of 9am on April 3, a total of 173,784 people have been tested for coronavirus, of which 38,168 tested positive.

Sadly the figures suggest that we will continue to see large jumps in the death tolls in the coming days.

The deaths being recorded and published by the Department of Health are only concerning those who have died in hospitals.

There are concerns that the overall total could be much higher when factoring in those who have died at home, particularly in nursing and care homes.

Earlier this week Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson said he believes the number of deaths in his city is much higher than official data currently suggests.

Pressure is continuing to grow on the government over its failures to scale up testing for coronavirus in the manner that other countries have done.

There are also growing and repeated concerns that frontline NHS staff are treating patients with the virus without the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment to shield them from the disease.

A number of doctors and nurses have now died after contracting Covid-19 while trying to treat others.

NHS England said that more than 5 million aprons, 1 million face masks, 6 million surgical masks and 21 million pairs of gloves have been delivered to the NHS.
