NASHIK: Municipal commissioner Ramesh Pawar conducted the allocation of reservations for women for the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) polls through a draw of lots in the presence of representatives of various political parties at the Dadasaheb Gaikwad auditorium on Tuesday.
Of the 67 seats for women in SC, ST and general categories, reservations for 42 seats had been directedly done by the state election department. The draw of lots to fix the remaining 25 seats was done by six municipal school students.
In the 2017 civic polls, there were 122 seats. This number has increased to 133 seats for the upcoming municipal corporation elections, including 19 seats for SC candidates, 10 for ST, and 104 for general category aspirants. Of 133 seats, 67 seats have been reserved for women, including 10 seats in the SC category, five in the ST category and 52 in the general category.
NMC commissioner Pawar said the number of SC and ST seats was decided as per the population in the city in 2011. Initially, the draw of lots was organised to select 10 seats for women in the SC category. This was followed by a draw of lots for three of the five ST category seats. The state election commission decided on two of the remaining seats reserved for women in the ST category. Similarly, in the case of the 52 general category seats for women, 12 were picked by draw of lots as the other 40 seats were already fixed by the state election commissioner.
The NMC commissioner said the list of all the 67 seats reserved for women from SC, ST and general categories is to be published in local newspapers, the NMC headquarters and all six divisional offices on Wednesday. Thereafter, the suggestions and objections are to be invited from people between June 1 and 6. The final list of women's reservations will be declared in the gazette.
