More than 60 motorcycle racers were arrested in Bangkok early Saturday and the creator of a Facebook page promoting the race was caught in a separate operation.
In a joint operation to crack down on dek waen racing on public streets, a combined team of officials from several agencies arrested 67 people — 40 adults and 27 teenagers — and confiscated 96 motorcycles in areas under the jurisdiction of Metropolitan Police Division 4.
All racers were asked to take urine tests and four, including three adults and one youth, tested positive for illicit drugs, said Pol Maj Gen Nithithorn Jintakanon, commander of the Traffic Police Division, during a media conference held at the Seacon Square shopping mall on Srinakarin Road in Bangkok.
Of the motorcycle seized, 24 were modified to make noises louder than the legal limit of 95 decibels.
The police team also confiscated 33 exhausted pipe tips designed to make louder noises than the legal limit from 21 motorcycle repair shops.
The creator of "Nanowhite’’ Facebook page for street racers, Theeraphol Suanpanaprai, 28, was earlier caught. With more than 31,000 followers, the page encouraged people to race on public streets, said Pol Maj Gen Nithithorn.
Mr Theeraphol has been charged with supporting street racers on public streets and his page closed, said the traffic police commander.
