Sixty-four percent of people said they trust newspapers as a source to obtain news, the highest percentage in a recent Yomiuri Shimbun survey.
The survey asked respondents which media they trust as a means of obtaining news, with a maximum of three answers allowed. After "newspapers" at 64 percent came "NHK TV" at 60 percent and "commercial TV stations" at 51 percent.
Meanwhile, the survey found that "portal sites such as Google and Yahoo" are trusted by 19 percent of respondents, while 16 percent depend upon news apps on mobile phones.
By age group, the top answer among respondents was "newspapers" in all groups except for those in their 30s.
Asked about the types of media respondents mainly use to obtain news, with a maximum of three answers allowed, "commercial TV stations" was the main choice at 61 percent, followed by "newspapers" at 60 percent and "NHK TV" at 53 percent.
Among those in their 30s or younger, the main media used was "portal sites" at 56 percent. However, only 31 percent said they trusted it. This finding shows there is a large gap in the percentage related to frequency of usage and degree of trust.
The survey was conducted from Sept. 4 to Oct.11 ahead of the 71st Newspaper Week starting today. A questionnaire was mailed to 3,000 randomly selected eligible voters, with 2,170 people responding with valid answers.
