60yo man drowns while swimming at Coles Beach in Devonport in Tasmania's north-west

A 60-year-old man is believed to have drowned while swimming at a beach in north-west Tasmania, police say.

Emergency services were called to Coles Beach in Devonport about 11:30am after reports a man appeared to be in difficulty in the water.

Police said the man was swimming with his son at the time and a resident living nearby responded to calls for help.

Ambulance and police attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tasmania Police Inspector Steve Jones said it was a "tragic incident".

He described swimming conditions as "moderate" and said he did not believe the man was a strong swimmer.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.

It is the third incident in the area in recent months.

In January, a 12-year-old boy was taken to hospital after two members of the public rescued him from the water at nearby Back Beach.

Last August, surfers helped rescue a 44-year-old man who got caught up in a strong current at Coles Beach.
