6 surprising stats for Eagles, Dolphins

The Philadelphia Eagles (5-6) are heading to Miami after a loss to Seattle and will visit the Dolphins (2-9) on Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Dolphins have won two of their last four games, but are still firmly in tank mode as they search out a top-five pick. The game offers some interesting matchups, dynamics and surprising stats for both teams.

***

1. Ryan Fitzpatrick doesn’t get much help with the YAC

When the Dolphins wide receivers make a big play or rack up huge numbers, it’s usually by the grace of Fitzpatrick’s arm. In a unique stat provide by Inside Edge, Fitzpatrick is No. 4 in the NFL when it comes to the percentage of his passing yards coming through the air.

Dolphins receivers are not among the top in the league at yards after the catch.

2. Miles Sanders average per touch tops in the NFL

He may not win Offensive Rookie of the Year thanks to Josh Jacobs, but Sanders is definitely having a successful rookie season and looks primed to be a great running back in the future. If without a boatload of touches in the running game, Sanders is still tied for first in the NFL in yards from scrimmage per touch.

33rd Saquon Barkley 3.9 409 / 105
34th David Montgomery 3.8 419 / 111
34th Frank Gore 3.8 310 / 81

3. Ryan Fitzpatrick is solid on 3rd and 10 or longer

Bills quarterback Josh Allen has thrown for first downs on 41.4% of his pass attempts on 3rd and 10+ YTG this season, best in NFL. Surprisingly, Fitzpatrick is in the top-five as well.

4. Vinny Curry is 4th in total grade for edge defenders over the past 6 games

Curry is a backup for the Eagles, but he’s one of the best in the NFL when given an opportunity since Week 6 Per Pro Football Focus.

It’s always interesting to see which players find their groove as the season progresses, and Vinny Curry has done just that. Through the first six weeks, he ranked tied for 31st at the edge defender position in overall grade (72.7), tied for 56th in pressures (12) and tied for 81st in stops (4). Since then, Curry ranks tied for fourth in overall grade (89.9), boasting a 25.9% pass-rush win rate that ranks fifth among edge defenders.

5. Dolphins offense among the worst in NFL at yards from scrimmage per game

The Dolphins have the recipe for tanking down-pat. A terrible offense and a terrible defense combine, equal a top-3 pick in the NFL. Miami in the bottom-five of the NFL at yards from scrimmage per game.

6. Lane Johnson got paid because he’s dominant

The Eagles’ right tackle missed a game in a half with concussion symptoms and promptly landed the biggest deal for an offensive tackle in history. Johnson’s run-blocking grade of 90.6 is the best in the NFL and his overall grade of 84.7 is second.
