6 players around league designated with non-exclusive franchise tag

The NFL’s deadline to tag a potential free agent with either a franchise or transition tag passed March 5 at 1:00 p.m. PT. Following the deadline, the league announced six players who were tagged this year.

All six players were designated with the non-exclusive franchise tag:

  1. Defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, Atlanta Falcons
  2. Defensive end Demarcus Lawrence, Dallas Cowboys
  3. Linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, Houston Texans
  4. Linebacker Dee Ford, Kansas City Chiefs
  5. Kicker Robbie Gould, San Francisco 49ers
  6. Defensive end Frank Clark, Seattle Seahawks

The signing period for franchise players begins at 1:00 p.m. PT March 13 and ends on the Tuesday following the 10th week of the regular season – Nov. 12.

Non-exclusive, unlike exclusive players, are allowed to negotiate with other teams, however, if the tagged player ultimately signs elsewhere, his new club would owe his previous team two first-round draft picks as compensation.

The one-year salary each of the tagged players is set to receive is based on Cap Percentage Average (CAP) at his respective position. For Clark and the other defensive ends, the tender amount for 2019 is $17,128M.

No team used the exclusive franchise or transition tags this year.

Here’s a look at the best free agents available for the Seahawks who were not tagged ahead of the deadline.
