6 hurt in shootings on West, North sides

Sept. 12--At least six people, including a 64-year-old woman, have been wounded in separate shootings on the West and North sides since Friday afternoon, police said.

A man was critically wounded and a woman was hurt in a shooting around 11:10 p.m. in the Rogers Park neighborhood on the North Side, said Chicago Police Department spokesman Officer Hector Alfaro.

A 24-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman were inside a vehicle traveling in the 1600 block of West Juneway Terrace past a group of people on the street when two male attackers fired gunshots, striking them, Alfaro said.

The car the two were in stopped about half a mile away at a Mobil gas station, where two ambulances were called to.

The man was hit in the right side and was taken in critical condition to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston.

The woman was hit in the left hand and was also taken to Saint Francis where her condition stabilized, Alfaro said.

At the scene of the shooting, police officers blocked off the intersection of Juneway Terrace and Paulina Street with yellow tape.

Officers shone flashlights on the ground and nearby four-story residential buildings in search of evidence.

A bottle of alcohol and six candles stood on a sidewalk next to the wall of one four-story building at the intersection.

Police said a crowd of people was holding a vigil for someone who was shot in the area a year ago when the shots were fired.

About two blocks south, police officers cordoned off a black Kia Soul that stood at a Mobil gas station at Howard Street and Sheridan Road with yellow and red tape.

The car's front passenger side door was open and a piece of plaid clothing lay on the ground next to it.

A Mikey Mouse sticker and a white "Support gay marriage" ribbon adorned the back of the car. Three small plush bears lay underneath the car's windshield.

No one was in custody as a result of the shooting, police said.

Most recently, a 27-year-old man was wounded in a shooting around 3:25 a.m. in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side, said Chicago Police Department spokeswoman Officer Amina Greer.

Police officers responded to a call of a person shot in the 3400 block of West Walnut Street and discovered the man lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the leg, Greer said.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, Greer said.

Ten minutes earlier, at 3:15 a.m., another 27-year-old man was critically hurt in a shooting in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side, Greer said.

The man and his friend were walking in the 100 block of North Central Avenue when they heard gunshots. The 27-year-old was struck in the chest and both of his arms, Greer said.

The man's friend drove him to Loretto Hospital for treatment. The man was later transferred to Stroger Hospital where he was listed in critical condition, Greer said.

About 2:55 a.m., a 64-year-old woman was wounded when a bullet came through the window of a home in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side, Greer said.

The woman was inside a residence in the 3800 block of West Monroe Street when someone outside fired shots a bullet came through her window.

She was struck in the leg and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. Her condition stabilized, Greer said.

About 1:45 a.m., a 25-year-old woman was wounded in a shooting in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side, Greer said.

Police officers responded to a call of a person shot in the 4100 block of West Van Buren Street and found the woman who suffered a gunshot wound to the arm, Greer said.

The woman refused to go to the hospital and was treated at the scene. Police said she was being uncooperative, and no other details were known about the shooting.

Earlier Friday afternoon, a 16-year-old boy was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg after apparently accidentally shooting himself, authorities said.

The boy was in the 1200 block of East 79th Street about 12:55 p.m. when he suffered the gunshot, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition had stabilized.
