6 Home Fixes That Make Things Worse (But Everyone Tries Them Anyway)

Everyone loves a good DIY moment. You watch a video, grab some tools, and suddenly you feel like a weekend warrior ready to tackle that lingering home issue. But not all fixes are created equal.

In fact, some of the most popular home repairs are just clever-looking shortcuts that end up causing long-term damage. They waste time, money, and in some cases, permanently lower your home’s value.

The worst part is that these “solutions” are so common, you might not even realize you’re making things worse. Before you head back to the hardware store, read this list carefully. Your future self (and your wallet) will thank you.

1. Painting Over Mold or Water Damage

It might seem like a quick cosmetic fix. The wall looks stained or musty, so you slap on a coat of paint to freshen things up. But painting over mold or water stains doesn’t solve the actual problem. It hides it.

Underneath that fresh color, the real issue (moisture) continues to grow. Mold spreads invisibly and can lead to structural decay or even health problems. That smell you tried to cover up? It’s not going away.

You need to identify the source of the moisture first. Is it a leaky pipe? Faulty roof? Poor ventilation? Address the root cause before even thinking about painting. Otherwise, you’re just sealing in damage that will eventually come back worse.

2. Using Drain Cleaner for Every Clog

Drain cleaners seem like magic in a bottle. You pour it down, wait a bit, and everything whooshes away. But repeated use of harsh chemical drain cleaners can corrode 1your pipes over time, especially if you have older metal plumbing.

Worse, they don’t always clear the actual blockage. If your drain is slow because of something like grease buildup, hair, or tree roots, these cleaners may provide only temporary relief. Meanwhile, the pipe continues to deteriorate underneath.

Mechanical options like a drain snake or even a simple plunger are safer first steps. And if the problem keeps returning, it’s probably time to call a professional rather than cooking your pipes with chemicals.

3. Sealing Drafts With the Wrong Materials

Trying to block out the cold or heat? Many homeowners grab whatever they have—tape, plastic wrap, even towels—and shove it into window cracks or around doors. But using the wrong materials can actually trap moisture and cause condensation, leading to mold, rot, and even damage to the surrounding structure.

Some sealants, like improperly applied caulk or non-breathable materials, can restrict airflow where some air exchange is actually needed. This can make your home more humid and uncomfortable, not less.

Use purpose-built weatherstripping and breathable insulation materials. And if your windows or doors are that bad, a replacement might be more cost-effective in the long run.

4. Patching Foundation Cracks With Surface Filler

A hairline crack in your basement wall or foundation can be unsettling, so many homeowners reach for a concrete patch kit and fill it in. Problem solved, right? Not really.

Surface fillers don’t address why the crack happened in the first place. If it’s caused by shifting soil, water pressure, or settling, the crack will return, or worse, grow. That cosmetic fix might give you false peace of mind while your foundation continues to deteriorate.

The smarter move is to monitor the crack. If it gets wider or changes direction, it could indicate a bigger issue. Consult a structural engineer or foundation specialist to determine if more serious intervention is needed.

5. Installing Peel-and-Stick Flooring Over Uneven Surfaces

Those peel-and-stick tiles or planks look amazing in the package and promise quick results with little effort. But if your subfloor isn’t perfectly level, dry, and clean, they won’t adhere properly.

Soon, they’ll shift, bubble, or peel at the edges. Even worse, if you install them over a surface with moisture issues—like a basement floor without a vapor barrier—you could end up with mold underneath.

That bargain upgrade quickly becomes a redo. A proper floor installation starts with proper prep work, even if that means sanding, leveling, or waterproofing. There’s no shortcut to a floor that actually lasts.

6. Using Interior Paint on Exterior Surfaces

Got some leftover interior paint? It can be tempting to use it outside for a mailbox, railing, or even a porch touch-up. After all, paint is paint, right? Not quite.

Interior paint isn’t designed to withstand sun, rain, temperature shifts, or humidity. It will peel, blister, or fade far faster than exterior-grade paint. In some cases, it can trap moisture and cause the wood or surface underneath to deteriorate faster.

Using the wrong type of paint may not seem like a big deal, but it shortens the life of the finish and creates more work later. Always choose materials designed for the job, even for small repairs.

When “Fixing” Becomes Failing

It’s easy to fall into the trap of doing something just because it looks like progress. But when it comes to home repairs, good intentions aren’t enough. A bad fix can leave you with worse problems than the original issue.

In most cases, the smarter path is to slow down, research the right solution, and resist the urge to go with the easiest or cheapest option. Cutting corners might feel satisfying in the moment, but you’ll pay for it in the long run with more stress, more repairs, and higher bills.

Have you ever tried a home fix that backfired? What did you learn the hard way?
