Guwahati: Assam police busted an inter-state drug racket in Guwahati on Saturday evening, and seized more than 1.75 kg of heroin worth over Rs 7 crore in international markets. Police arrested six people, of which five are from Manipur and one from Nagaland, in this connection.
“The accused came from Manipur citing a medical appointment in Guwahati. Meanwhile, a special squad was tracking them right from Moreh to Churachandpur in Manipur, till they reached Sonapur in Guwahati where the accused were caught. They also recovered the consignment,” said Himangshu Das, assistant commissioner of police, Dispur.
According to an officer, the heroin packets were hidden under the front dashboard and inside the rear tail lights of the vehicle. “No one can detect the drugs during a normal search if the consignment is concealed in such places of the vehicle. Expert mechanics opened up the insides of the vehicle to take out the drugs, which were packed in 100 soap cases,” the official said.
The accused have been identified as Khaiminlal Touthang (34) of Monnaphai, Seiminthang Mate (37) of Molnom, Paominthang Lhanghal (30) of M. Jamkim, Kailalson Khongsai (35) of Moraphai and Lulun Kuki (51) of Tuibong from the Churachandpur district in Manipur. The sixth accused has been identified as Kamkhojim (56) of Phaipijang village in Nagaland’s Dimapur.
A case has been registered against the accused under several sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. “Investigation is on,” the official said.
