6.1 quake reported off Japan's east coast

Map via USGS

TOKYO - A powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Japan near Fukushima.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said no tsunami warning was in effect. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said only weak shaking would have been felt on Honshu and the risk of damage was likely to be minor.

Details of the extent of the damage have not yet emerged from the area of the quake, which hit 281km southeast of Kamaishi.

The depth of the earthquake, which struck at 2.37am (12.37am Thailand time), was measured at 10km.

A similar but stronger earthquake in 2011 killed four people and injured 10 more when landslides occurred and fires broke out as a result.
