Rev. Michael Pfleger and anti-violence activist Andrew Holmes on Tuesday announced a $5,000 reward for anyone with information that could lead to an arrest in the fatal shooting of Marqueese Hampton in West Englewood last month.
Pfleger and Holmes were joined by members of Hampton’s family and Chicago Police Department Cmdr. Larry Snelling in the 5600 block of South Wood, where the 25-year-old Hampton was shot to death Sept. 30.
Police have said Hampton and another man were shot while they were running away from two other men. Hampton was struck in the torso and leg and was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital. Police said the other man was shot in the leg but left the scene on his own and never sought treatment at a hospital.
No arrests have been made.
“We are, once again, at an all-too-familiar reality,” Pfleger said. “We’ve got to turn these cowards in, turn the shooters in. I say it all the time. We know who they are, the community knows who they are. We’ve got to come forward. People say, ‘Well, I’m afraid.’ Well, guess what. While that shooter’s still loose in the community, we should all be afraid.”
Hampton’s mother, Tiffany Hampton, remembered her son as a good person who “had a good heart.”
“He was humble, he didn’t bother nobody, and he didn’t deserve to die like this,” she added. “I just want justice for my son.”
Marqueese Hampton is also survived by his 5-year-old daughter, Tiffany Hampton said.
