59 years in prison for 2 convicted of shooting 'Hoop Dreams' coach

CHICAGO _ Two men convicted early this year in a shooting that left a high school basketball coach featured in the documentary "Hoop Dreams" paralyzed were each sentenced Thursday to 59 years in prison, according to prosecutors and court records.

The coach, Shawn Harrington, was hit by two bullets as he shielded his daughter during the attack in the Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood in January 2014 that left him paralyzed from the waist down.

Cedryck Davis and Deandre Thompson were convicted in January of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm after a jury trial. On Thursday, the two were each sentenced to 59 years by Cook County Judge Thomas Byrne, said Cook County state's attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.

Harrington, an assistant boys basketball coach at Marshall who as a student played on the Marshall basketball team featured in the 1994 documentary "Hoop Dreams," was driving his daughter to school the morning of Jan. 30, 2014. He was stopped at a red light in the 3800 block of West Augusta Boulevard about 7:45 a.m. when the shooting took place, police and prosecutors said.

Davis was standing on a corner when he pulled out a handgun and fired, police said. Harrington was hit by two bullets as he leaned across the seat to shield his daughter, according to prosecutors.

A third bullet lodged in the headrest of the seat where his daughter was sitting, according to prosecutors, but she was not injured. The then-38-year-old coach managed to drive a short way despite his injuries, authorities said.
