55 years of collection: final days for antique trader

It's a kooky, unique shop that's had a closing down sale sign out the front for about 10 years, but the end has finally arrived for Our Town Tool and Antique Trader.

The Cardiff South store of second hand wares and knick-knacks is set to close for good in a matter of weeks as plans have been lodged with council to demolish the building and replace it with a set of residential units.

The closure is sure to be sad news for some, with the business attracting a loyal following of customers over its 14 years of existence.

In an indication of the trader's antique authenticity not seen in many businesses these days, a quick Google search of Our Town Tool and Antique Trader won't easily result in a phone number and the owner Geoff, who only wanted to be referred to by his first name, says the business sells "a whole lot of junk".

"Everybody knows what everything's worth," Geoff said.

"There's anything and everything.

"If I can make a couple of dollars on anything, I'm happy."

But inside is the ultimate mancave with an array of collectables Geoff has amassed over the past five decades.

He has mainly sourced the goods through garage sales around Newcastle as well as via Gumtree.

"It started with a whole pile of stuff that I couldn't get rid of," he said.

There's a whole assortment of tools, vintage Coca Cola bottles, lamps, machinery, cookware, furniture and bric-a-brac that fill the John Street shed, and it all has to go before the building is demolished.

"It's my whole life - 55 years of collection," Geoff said.

In an effort to clear the shop before it shuts, Geoff said all the items have been heavily discounted to below cost price. The words "make an offer please" have been spray painted on the front of the building.

And while he isn't happy that he's been forced to close down, Geoff says the thing he has most enjoyed about the business is all the wonderful people he's met through it.

"A lot of friendly people, a few thieves - it comes with the territory," he said.

"The most rewarding thing is definitely the people I've met.

"They're on the same lines as me. They like collecting too so we're on common ground."

The business is open Wednesday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday from 10am to 2pm.
