A majority of Jewish citizens, 55 percent, support a two-state solution, while only 24 percent of right-wing supporters called for the annexation of occupied areas in the West Bank to Israel's borders, according to a new poll published in Tel Aviv on Wednesday.
The survey was held at the request of the “Commissioners for Israel Security” movement. The questions were asked in a new way to understand the public's opinion on the principles of Israeli-Palestinian relations.
Surveyors were asked about their desired goal in the current circumstances, and were given three optional answers that included: a permanent peace agreement with the Palestinians on the basis of agreed borders, Israel on one hand and a demilitarized Palestinian state on the other; civil separation from the Palestinians, the evacuation of some remote settlements and the continued presence of the Israeli army in the Palestinian areas until agreement is reached; or Israeli control over all areas, in which the Israeli and Palestinian populations live together under Israeli sovereignty.
55 percent of respondents supported the first solution, that is, the permanent agreement with the Palestinians on a two-State basis; 21 percent supported the second solution and 24 percent the third solution. As for the “Jewish House”, the most extremist of the Israeli parties, 44 percent of its followers said they supported annexation, while 35 percent backed the first solution.
Among Likud voters, 52 percent said they supported the first solution, 31 percent said they favor the annexation, while the rest (17 percent) backed the partial withdrawal.
