55 people have died after testing positive for coronavirus

The number of people who have died in the UK after testing positive for coronavirus has risen to 55.

Health secretary Matt Hancock spoke live at the House of Commons today and confirmed the news.

Speaking in parliament, Matt Hancock said: "The coronavirus pandemic is the most serious public health emergency that our nation has faced for a generation.

"Our goal is to protect life."

He thanked the NHS for its "exemplary approach" to its work so far.

He added: "The disease is now accelerating and 53 people have sadly now died."

Department of Health and Social Care have since confirmed the number of deaths is 55 in a recent tweet on its official Twitter page.

It said: "UPDATE on coronavirus (#COVID19) testing in the UK: As of 9am on 16 March, a total of 44,105 have been tested: 42,562 negative.

"1,543 positive. 55 patients who tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) have sadly died."

The number of confirmed cases in the UK currently stands at 1,543.

The sad news comes as the Prime Minister said all non-essential travel and contact with others must stop, asking everyone in the UK to work from home if possible and avoid all pubs, clubs and other social gatherings.

It was particularly important new advice for over 70s, people with serious health conditions, and pregnant women, he said.

Self-isolated people must ask others to help them obtain supplies.

We are expecting a further regional break down to follow.
