INDORE: An alarming Covid spike in Indore pushed MP's daily count to 72 on Thursday. The week's tally has shot up to 307 - close to the monthly tallies of October and November, an indication of how rapidly the virus is spreading again.
Indore, MP's worst Covid-hit district, reported 55 new cases - the highest in around six and a half months. There were 221 active cases on Thursday - an alarming 61% of the state's count and, again, its highest in six months. What adds to the worry is the high number of travelers that arrive in Indore every day from states like Maharashtra, Delhi and Gujarat that are seeing an exponential surge in Covid cases. All nine Omicron cases detected in MP have been in Indore, though all of them are asymptomatic.
Ujjain is also causing grave concern as its positivity rate has soared to 3.67, far higher than the state's average of 0.11%, which too is on the upswing. According to the state health bulletin, 714 Covid cases have been detected in MP in December.
Positivity rate rising in MP
Around 92% of the state's eligible population is now fully vaccinated. "Madhya Pradesh is the first in the country in administering the second dose," CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan said.
The rising Covid count, however, is a sign that Covid precautions must be followed ever more strictly. The state's positivity rate, which was 0.02% towards the beginning of the month stood at 0.07% on Wednesday. The day's Covid surge was fueled largely by 32 cases in Indore.
Bhopal reported six new cases, while 2 new cases each were found in Jabalpur, Jhabua and Ujjain. Indore, where all nine Omicron cases of MP have been detected, is causing a great deal of concern. On Wednesday, 26 people recovered, taking the cure count to 7,82,976. MP's recovery rate is over 98.6%.
