54 things you only know if you're from Liverpool

Liverpool is known around the world for its music, culture, fashion sense and iconic waterfront - but what about the things only those who live here know?

Only people from the city or those who have been here for a significant amount of time will really be able to explain some of the lesser-known things which make Liverpool great.

From the characters you're guaranteed to see busking in the city centre, to how annoying it can be hearing our accent on the TV, and even the kids who mind cars on a matchday - they're the things which make Liverpool unique - and form the fabric of the city for those living and working here every day.

We've rounded up 54 things you only know if you live in Liverpool - as suggested by Scousers (or adopted Scousers) themselves.

1. How annoying it is always repeating ourselves in different cities

There are only so many times it is acceptable to ask us to say 'chicken', 'Steven Gerrard' and other words non-Scousers think sound funnier when we say them.

2. Each other (everyone in Liverpool knows everyone)

Seriously, everyone in Liverpool really does know everyone and everyone is connected in some way.

Even if you don't know someone personally, you'll end up working with their next door neighbour or cousin and it will prove the theory that everyone in Liverpool is connected.

3. The definition of a wool...

And you can spot one from afar too.

4. ...and how they're different from Scousers

It's nothing personal. But there are plenty of tell-tale signs.

5. How Concert Square is really for students and people who've just started going into town

Concert Square, Liverpool (Liverpool Echo)

Every Scouser will remember a night out in Concert Square when they very first started going to town.

For us, it was Cube, Mood and Office which were the go-to places. The names often change - but the Square stays the same.

6. Getting your hair and make-up done for a night out is essential - or so Scouse girls let you believe

There's a reason make-up and hair salons get booked up during important weekends, such as the races. Or most weekends, really.

7. Keeping on top of your beauty habits (eyelashes, shellac etc they're all essentials)

We all have our go-to beauty girl and wouldn't dream of going anywhere else

8. Just how great the city is

Liverpool is the best city in our opinion - and we are sure everyone here agrees with us too. In fact readers tell us so all the time.

9. Certain brands are for out-of-towners, and that's just the way it is

We aren't going to go into the list as it will probably get us in trouble.

But Scousers know their brands - and what we're talking about here.

10. Sarcasm– no one does it better than Scousers, so stop it if you're not from Liverpool

Ever tried to have an argument with a Scouser? You'll have probably lost due to them getting the biggest laugh when they said something completely sarcastic.

11. Despite being proud to be a Scouser, we'll never quite get over hearing our accent on TV

Nothing makes us cringe quite like hearing the Scouse accent on television, or worse when someone tries to over-play the accent too much.

12. How good getting Christmas pyjamas really is

It's the Christmas tradition we couldn't be without.

13. How boring stereotyping Scousers for wearing rollers is

Surely everyone is over this now?

We get the initial shock but it really has been years, and the majority of people don't even use rollers anymore and will opt for pincurls instead - or just get their hair wanded.

14. Scouse girls are always the best dressed

This is a fact.

15. And Scouse lads for that matter

Just like this.

16. Not being able to walk into town without seeing the man in the multicoloured suit busking

Even if you are in the worst mood, watching him sing with his fake microphone surely makes you smile.

17. The wait at the Bombed Out Church for a taxi on a night out

Bombed Out Church, Liverpool (James Maloney / Liverpool Echo)

Every Scouser will have at least one memory of waiting outside the Bombed Out Church for a taxi after a night out.

It feels like the coldest place in the world, and you can't help feeling your taxi is never going to come. It always does in the end.

18. We all have a story about The Mayflower

(Google Maps)

A Chinese after a night out? There is one place where we've all ended up.

The Duke Street restaurant is open during the day too, but it is the antics which Scousers will have witnessed in The Mayflower after a night out which make it so memorable.

19. 'Taking your own' at the bar means 20p - and not a penny more or less

And every Scouser knows it.

20. The Shush woman

The city centre store on Tarleton Street, near Marks and Spencer's Church Street store, leaves a lasting impression on anyone who walks past. The unmistakable sound of the latest bargains being called over the speaker system is a big part of any day's shopping in town.

21. Only Wools dance to Mr Brightside

This is pretty self-explanatory

22. You always ask a taxi driver if they are Red or Blue - and if they've been busy

Delta taxi in Liverpool. (Ben Spence)

It just happens so naturally now that no one even realises they're saying it.

23. The kids asking to mind your car on a matchday

Anyone who has tried to parked by either stadiums will know all about these kids.

Give them £5 and they'll watch your car while the match is on. At least that's the idea.

24. A steamboat is a Southern Comfort with lime and lemonade.

If you ask for one outside Liverpool nobody knows what you mean

25. It might say "The Blue Angel" on the outside, but everyone knows it's called the Raz.

It's the nightclub which many remember entering but few recall actually leaving.

The Blue Angel is famous for many things, and no we aren't talking about its sticky carpet. Instead we were thinking of its cheap drinks and providing many of us with some of the funniest memories.

Scousers know it is at The Raz and you can read why here.

26. Running through the Williamson Square fountains was a highlight of your childhood

We can't remember a time when they weren't there.

27. Ringo is the least popular Beatle

We're not saying it's our opinion, but one which a lot of Scousers share - with quite a mixed reaction to his knighthood last year.

28. Saying 'tra' less than three times at the end of a phonecall is socially unacceptable

Surely this is like a rule?

29. Byrne's chippy is worth the massive queue

We'd recommend getting the fish from the North Liverpool institution.

30. Nabzy's red salt makes everything taste better

It's up there with the Peri-Peri salt from Nandos.

31. It's not Asda...it's THE Asda

We often have to write 'Asda' in our headlines, but we all know it is really known as 'the Asda'.

32. And it is Home and Bargain not Home Bargains

Surely no one ever says its name without the 'and'.

33. The Philharmonic pub has the best toilets in town

We never thought we'd describe toilets as beautiful but just look at them.

34. Old Hall Street is an absolute wind tunnel

It is so hard to maintain any form of dignity when walking down the business district thoroughfare.

35. All Scousers don't actually know every single Beatles song

We're sorry but it is true.

As much as we love them, we're afraid we don't quite live up to tourist hype and remember every single lyric.

36. The pubs outside Central Station are always busy, no matter what time of the day it is

(Liverpool Echo)

You could walk past at 10am and there would still be people having a good laugh inside any of these pubs.

37. The scrap iron van which comes down your road

We've all heard 'Scarp Iron' screamed down our road when the van makes its way down the street.

38. Not trusting anyone born here who isn't at least nominally Red or Blue

Being from Liverpool you need to have a team; Liverpool or Everton.

You'll need to be prepared for funny looks if you say you have no preference. Everyone has a preference.

39. Knowing that although we are one city, there is a big North and South divide and venturing between them is like a mystery tour

For anyone living in South Liverpool travelling around the North will seem pretty alien, and the same for those who live in the North making their way around the South.

We all tend to stick to our half of the city - wherever you reckon they end and begin.

40. Driving through the Strand is an absolute nightmare

Especially during the weekends or during rush hour.

And once you're stuck, there is no getting out of it either.

41. Salt and Pepper chicken is a Scouse invention and don't tell us otherwise

Every Scouser is precious when it comes to salt and pepper chicken, each believing their chippy serves the best.

You can read our piece on the best salt and pepper chicken in Liverpool here.

42. Chippies are completely different in Liverpool

One thing most people are shocked by when they move to Liverpool is that Scouse chippies so often offer Chinese dishes too. Maybe it's down to our rich Chinese heritage - and the fact we all love salt and pepper chicken (see point 41)

43. How great Sayers is

While there may only be a few left in the city, we are lucky to have them and its sister company Pound Bakery here in the city.

44. The ECHO is actually based in Liverpool

Yes, we are aware everyone thinks the ECHO is based in Manchester - but we aren't.

We used to be in the huge brown ECHO building on Old Hall Street (the one with Liverpool ECHO written all over it to help those who weren't sure), but we moved this year and are now based in St Paul's Square, just opposite our old home.

As our editor has explained, printing takes place in Oldham, but the journalists who bring you the content you see on our website and in print are based right here in the city.

45. What being a football widow is actually like (your life revolves around the fixtures)

(PAUL ELLIS/AFP/Getty Images)

I'm convinced my fiancé will miss our wedding if it clashes with a Liverpool match.

46. There's always a sing along on the night bus

You really need to experience it to believe it.

47. The last train is filled with people eating a Lobster Pot

We'd recommend getting one too because the smell will only make you crave it.

48. Lecky Legs

He's the dancing sensation who Scousers love, you've probably saw a video or two of Lecky Legs dancing in Church Street or outside a match.

49. What Bongos Bingo was like when it first started

Bongo's Bingo (Bongo's Bingo)

Liverpool is the home of Bongos Bingo and we know exactly what it was like during the early days.

You can read our reporter's piece about a night at Bongos from 2017 here.

50. How much of a life saver the self serve tills in Liverpool ONE's Zara really are...

They save so much time. And for anyone who is scared to use them because they are unsure how to work them, there is always a member of staff on hand to help.

51. ...But also the dread when you need to take something back to store because you still need to wait in the queue

Unfortunately you cannot return items via the self serve tills so you still need to join the dreaded queue.

52. How some of the best businesses are independent and run by Scousers themselves

Liverpool is lucky to be home to some of the best independents in the world.

Often, we find the best food is served not from a chain but from Scousers themselves.

53. The feeling of walking around Glastonbury and seeing everyone you know

Glastonbury Festival returns to Worthy Farm on June 26 (Yui Mok/PA Wire)

Anyone who has been to the previous two Glastonbury festivals will be aware just how many Scousers now attend the festival every year.

You walk through and can't avoid bumping into people you know or hearing the Scouse accent across the fields.

54. Knowing how wrong the bad coverage of Ladies Day really is

The ECHO are proud to highlight the best aspects of Ladies Day and share our best dressed on the day itself, as well of the first and last day of the festival.

You can take a look at last year's coverage here.
