54 cases as Hunter New England retains unwanted COVID-19 case crown

The Hunter recorded 54 cases in Friday's update, again the highest tally for any health district in NSW.

Murrumbidgee trailed closely behind with 52 cases.

Together, the two regional areas make up just under 40 per cent of the 268 locally-acquired cases reported in the state.

The Central Coast added four cases.

Friday's figures mean the region now had 856 active cases, with 17 in hospital and four in intensive care.

Among the new cases 36 were infectious in the community, 12 were isolated and the status of six remains under investigation.

There are only 15 cases not connected to known cases or clusters.

Newcastle added 15 fresh cases, while Midcoast added another 10.

There were seven in Lake Macquarie, six in Cessnock, six in Tamworth, four in Port Stephens, three in Maitland, two in Singleton and one at Armidale.

The cases were less scattered than in recent days, with Hamilton South accounting for four.

Another three fell in Wallsend, with two each in Mayfield and New Lambton.

Adamstown, Carrington, Islington and Merewether had individual cases.

Midcoast had five in Taree, two each in Forster and Tuncurry and another at Tea Gardens.

Lake Macquarie had no double-ups with cases in Jewells, Morisset, Mount Hutton, Redhead, Swansea, West Wallsend and Windale.

There were two Kearsley cases in Cessnock's six, which were otherwise spread over Cessnock, Greta, Kurri Kurri and Neath.

Bolwarra Heights, Chisholm and Rosebrook were home to Maitland's cases while a pair in Raymond Terrace, plus Heatherbrae and Anna Bay cases, pushed Port Stephens to four.

Tamworth had five, with a sixth in West Tamworth, while Singleton's cases were split between Darlington and Hunterview.

The state had two deaths, a man in his 70s in Albury and a woman in her 90s near Wollongong.

The woman was unvaccinated while the man had received one dose.
