53yo P-plater loses his licence in drink driving incident

A 53-year-old Canberra man has had his probationary licence suspended after he allegedly recorded a blood alcohol level five times the limit of a full-licenced driver early on Saturday night.

About 6:00pm ACT police received multiple triple-0 calls about a car swerving into oncoming traffic on Kuringa Drive in Spence.

Officers said the man collided with an oncoming vehicle before fleeing the scene in the car.

A short time later police found the car at the man's home in Melba and he was taken to the City Police Station where he returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.269.

The legal limit for a P-plater is 0.00.

Acting Station Sergeant Paul Hutcheson said the man's "exceptionally high" reading would be five times the legal limit for someone with a full licence.

Station Sergeant Hutcheson said the 53-year-old man should have known better.

"The attending police stated they were amazed and thankful that this incident did not result in a serious injury or worse to other road users," he said.

The man's licence was immediately suspended and he is expected to face court next month charged with high-range drink driving, and driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.
