54,000 loudspeakers removed in a week in Uttar Pradesh

LUCKNOW: About 54,000 loudspeakers were pulled down from different religious places for flouting decibel limits in the state last week as part of the statewide drive carried out on CM Yogi Adityanath’s direction. The volume of 60,295 loudspeakers was also reduced during the same period.

ADG, law and order, Prashant Kumar said the drive against loudspeakers is likely to continue in the coming days.

“We have ensured that no individual is harassed by cops during the drive,” said Kumar.

He added that the loudspeakers are being removed from all religious places without any discrimination.

“As per the rule, loudspeakers that were installed without the permission of the district administration or those which were installed more than the permitted numbers are being removed,” the ADG said.

The officer said only one loudspeaker will be installed at a religious place, be it a temple or a mosque. If a religious premises is vast then more than one loudspeaker can be installed but only after inspection of the premises by a senior officer, the officer added.

Kumar said that orders of the high court regarding loudspeakers are also being considered during the exercise.

“The basic premises on which the loudspeakers have been removed or instructed to reduce the volume is that ‘sound’ emitted by them should not reach or enter premises of neighbours,” said the officer.
