50p coin 'sells for £21,000' with 10 million in circulation as Scots urged to check wallets

A design released by the Royal Mint in January last year has reportedly sold for a massive £21,000.

The coin - which was sold on eBay - sold after less than two years after being created.

The coin is not rare nor vintage with 10 million more in circulation - so you could be making some cash just in time for the festive season.

The design was released to mark the UK leaving the European Union and could now be worth a lot more than you would think, reports The Express.

The limited edition coin has the Queen’s head on the one side with the commemorative message ‘Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations’ engraved on the back.

Many of these coins are for sale on eBay, with astronomical prices ranging from £3,500 to £21,000.

Their value comes from their commemorative and collectible nature, marking a significant moment in British history.

Those that do find themselves possessing one have been suggested to keep it in the hopes of future compounding value.

Additionally, the 10 million coins in circulation are meant to have the date of ‘31 January 2020’.

However, there was an original design reading ‘31 October 2019’, making these recalled coins far more valuable.

This was due to the fact the coins were originally minted when the original Brexit date was October 31.

An estimated one million of these coins were created and distributed before Government realised the original deadline would be missed.

While most of the coins were recalled and melted down by the Royal Mint, it is believed many are still out in the wide world.

Avid coin collectors will know that typos and errors often translate to gold, another example of which an Olympics 50p with an error in its design that sold for over £400.

The aquatic 50p was part of the London 2012 Olympic Games coin series, but it was redesigned shortly before its release.

While the original design had water lines streaming down the swimmers face, the new and more common design had less visible lines.

For anyone looking to buy or sell rare or valuable coins, it is highly recommended that they do thorough research before putting any money on the table.

On eBay, sellers set the Buy It Now or starting bid price for items, meaning they may not necessarily be worth that amount.

Additionally, collectors looking to add to their unique coin collections should be wary as online sellers can photoshop and edit images to make the fakes look far more realistic than they are in reality.

Some other highly valuable coins minted in the last five years include:

Winnie the Pooh 50p set of three - minted in 2021

These nostalgic coins have designs created by The Walt Disney Company, with each 50p coin having a different character from the beloved series: Owl, Tigger and Winnie the Pooh himself.

These coins commemorate 95 years since the first publication of Winnie the Pooh.

The Great Fire of London £2 coin - minted in 2016

This gold proof £2 coin has an engraving depicting the infamous event with a street on fire beside the Thames river.

Diversity Built Britain 50p - minted in 2020

Engraved with this message on the reverse side, the 50p is the first in a series of coins planned to pay tribute to the contributions of BAME communities in the UK.
