50p coin released just two years ago sells for £650

A 50p coin released just two years ago has sold for £650 on eBay and there are more in circulation.

The 50p was released to mark the UK leaving the European Union with 10million put into general circulation.

From the start the coins have been prized by collectors, selling for £10 to £20 shortly after their release

One coin sold for £650 on January 23, and other sellers are asking for as much as £865 for theirs, reports The Echo.

But there are other examples you can pick up for as little as £30.

ChangeChecker expert Alexandra Fiddons previously told The Mirror : "The 50p was teased for a long while before the UK's official exit from the European Union and when it was officially released into circulation, people were eager to snap them up for their own collections.

"This coin marks an incredibly significant moment in British history and it's possible that people who aren't usually interested in the hobby, may have been tempted to secure this 50p to commemorate the event forever."

She said: "Sometimes we see coins listed for prices well above their face value on the secondary market.

"Sometimes this is driven by low mintage figures, meaning there are fewer coins for people to collect, but it can also be driven by the popularity of the theme."
