$5K reward offered in fatal shooting that injured Giants’ Corey Ballentine

An anonymous donor is offering an additional $5,000 reward to anyone who can provide information on the shooter who killed Washburn University football player Dwane Simmons and wounded New York Giants sixth-round pick Corey Ballentine in April.

The Shawnee Co. Crime Stoppers announced via Facebook on Tuesday that the anonymous donor added $5,000 to the $2,000 reward that was already being offered by Crime Stoppers for information that leads to an arrest.

The donor is said to be a “Washburn University supporter.”

Topeka Police Chief Bill Cochran has maintained that strong leads continue to be investigated and that there’s an optimism an arrest will be made, but nearly two months removed from the incident, it still remains unclear who was involved or what the motive was.

Ballentine and Simmons were celebrating the former’s new life in the NFL mere hours after the draft had concluded when someone in a car approached them outside of an off-campus party, asked for drugs before driving up the road, and then returned and opening fire, authorities have said.

Anyone with useful information is encouraged to contact the Shawnee County Crime Stoppers at 785-234-0007 or share tips online at p3tips.com/128.
