500-year-old medieval coin found buried in Leeds field

A Leeds detectorist has found a 500-year-old coin dating back to medieval times in a Gildersome field.

Dean Edwards, 45, discovered the lead 'farm token' while detecting on land between Gildersome and Churwell.

He had the token verified by an expert who revealed it would have been issued by feudal landowners in lieu of cash.

The token could be used to buy food or goods back from the landowner.

Dean said: "Sometimes they were used as a replacement if coinage was in short supply as well.

"I wonder who lost it and how it affected them? Did they get in trouble with the other half?"

Dean has been detecting for two years and added: "I have mostly found World War One and World War two stuff and coins.

"I like being outside and the history. I kind of use it as meditation to get away from the stresses of life because you have to concentrate on the sounds."
