£500,000 pledged to help restore Troon station by Railway Heritage Trust

Half-a-million pounds has been pledged to help restore Troon station after it was destroyed by a devastating fire.

The Railway Heritage Trust hopes to salvage what remains of iconic Ayrshire station after Saturday's horrendous blaze.

It has committed £500,000 but estimate the damage could cost millions – with similarities made to a blaze at Ballater station which was destroyed in 2015 and cost in excess of £4 million to restore.

Troon station's historic building first opened in 1892 and was designed by architect James Miller who is also responsible for the Turnberry Hotel and station, and Glasgow Central.

More than 100 years of history was burned to the ground after a fire broke out in the ticket office and later spread to the roof around 12.40pm on Saturday.

This week, demolition teams and contractors arrived at the station to assess the damage as transport bosses face a sweat on how to deal with resurrecting the station.

The station was also home to a kiosk and hairdressers with both business left decimated by the blaze.

The Railway Heritage Trust has offered some crumb of comfort to restoring the unique charm of the station.

The trust confirmed in a tweet that they will offer cash to Network Rail to help with restoration.

Dedicated station master Brian Muir, who has spent 24 years at Troon, would love to see the building restored and not lose its historic significance.

Speaking to Ayrshire Live, Brian 66, said: “I would love to see it restored, even if the frontage can look the same but also modern inside."

A fundraiser has been set up to support the businesses ravaged by the fire.
