£50 Northern Ireland staycation voucher scheme "will be introduced when the time is right"

A staycation voucher scheme is set to be rolled out "when the time is right" to help tourism in Northern Ireland, says The Department for Economy.

It allocated funding in September for the £50 voucher.

It can be used at a number of participating businesses and continues to be developed by Tourism NI.

Economy Minister Diane Dodds has not confirmed whether the voucher will be per individual or household.

A draft document which put forward the proposals suggested running a voucher scheme in partnership with major NI media outlets.

It said the promotions would allocate a set number of £50 vouchers to readers to redeem at participating businesses. This would be available to all households in Northern Ireland.

A spokesperson for the Department for the Economy said: "The scheme will provide consumers with a discount of up to £50 with participating accommodation providers, attractions and experience providers.

"The scheme will be introduced when the time is right and will aim to stimulate demand by incentivising people to take staycations and support the local economy."

On Monday, Stormont’s Finance Minister announced a £300m support package for businesses and the most vulnerable. This follows the release of an additional £400m of funds for Northern Ireland by the UK Treasury just over two weeks ago.

The biggest single expenditure item of this latest package concerned long-term rates support for businesses (£150m).
