50 firefighters tackle two separate Belfast blazes in early hours of Saturday morning

Firefighters tackled two separate arson attacks in North and South Belfast in the early hours of Saturday.

Around 50 crew members responded to blazes at Creighton's Garage, Finaghy and at a property in Silverstream Parade.

On arrival to the scene of Creighton's, the 30 crew members were faced with six vehicles alight, and a small adjacent building on fire.

A considerable amount of damage was done.

Police are appealing for witnesses and information following the attack at the Diamond Gardens area.

They are appealing to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity or vehicles in the area to contact them.

Then, 20 fire fighters attended a separate incident in North Belfast at around 4.40am, where a house had been targeted in a 'reckless' arson attack.

An NI Fire Service spokesperson added: "In this incident, no persons were injured and there was some degree of damage from the fire which was in the hallway of the property.

"We were alerted by neighbours who heard the smoke alarm next door. So, it is vital that people are aware to have their smoke alarms working."

Police are appealing for witnesses and information in relation to this attack.

Detective Sergeant Corrigan said: "We are extremely fortunate that no-one was in the house at the time of this incident.  Whoever carried out this reckless attack showed total disregard for the occupant and other residents in the area.

"They did not care who could be killed or injured.

"Anyone who has any information about this incident or saw any suspicious activity or vehicles in the Silverstream Parade area in the early hours of this morning is asked to get in touch quoting reference number 319 of 30/03/19."
