50,000 sign petition calling for Piers Morgan to be removed as host of GMB

More than 50,000 people have signed a petition calling for Piers Morgan to be removed as host of ITV's Good Morning Britain.

The petition says Piers is "one of our country's most heinous public figures" and takes issue with his reporting on transgender issues.

The petition reads: "Wake up to the reality of Morgan’s behaviour. Hate crimes are on the rise, transphobia and discrimination over gender identity is becoming commonplace both upon social media and in the real world, and ITV continue to sit idly and let it play out in the name of entertainment.

"It should be obvious by now that this has far surpassed an acceptable threshold, with Morgan’s rhetoric and actions sitting firmly in dangerous territory."

Last year while discussing gender and transgender issues - and a gender-neutral penguin at a London zoo - Piers said he now identifies as a two-spirit penguin.

There were almost 1,000 complaints to Ofcom but he was cleared and not investigated.

Piers said he felt 'empowered' by the decision.

Ofcom received more than 3,200 complaints about Piers' two interviews with Care Minister Helen Whately earlier this month, and a further 600 over his interview with Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

But Ofcom has ruled he did not do anything wrong, adding that he is "well known for his combative style".

*Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV
