50,000 lightning strikes in the last 24 hours as temperatures in Wales soar to above 30°C

Wales is braced for more thunderstorms after flash flooding affected parts of the country.

Tuesday will be more settled after 50,000 lightning strikes were recorded across the UK on Monday, but there are thunderstorms around and could strike anywhere.

Temperatures are set to soar above 30°C and the Met Office has said it will be a "very hot day".

Parts of Aberystwyth were hit by flash flooding leaving pavements and roads underwater, with water pouring into shops and business owners sweeping rain water out of their premises on Monday afternoon.

The Gower, parts of Ceredigion and Gwynedd were also hit by the thunderstorms.

More than a dozen homes are thought to have been struck by lightning at Penrhyn Madoc, in  Penrhyn Bay, and hailstones the size of golf balls set off car alarms in Capel Curig.

According to the Met Office: "This exceptional spell of hot weather is likely to continue for many days to come, with temperatures exceeding 30°C across central, southern and southeastern areas."

The Met Office forecast for Wales on Tuesday is to be largely dry with sunshine, but thundery showers are possible throughout the day. It will be a "very hot day" with highs of 30°C in places.

The Met Office forecast for Tuesday night is: "A dry and warm night for many with late sunshine and clear spells. However, there is a chance of some heavy and thundery showers developing in places throughout the night. Minimum temperature 16 °C."

BBC Breakfast Carol Kirkwood described the warm weather as "unprecedented".

She said: "We have had four consecutive days with temperatures above 34 Celsius somewhere in the UK. We are likely to see that again today (Tuesday) and tomorrow. Unprecedented to have six days above 34 Celsius in the UK!"

Welsh forecaster Derek Brockway said that temperatures on Tuesday would be 31°C in Monmouth and 25°C in Barmouth on Tuesday.

He added: "If you missed the thunderstorms on Mondays, there's always the next few days! Met Office warnings are in force

"Torrential downpours in places with a risk of flash flooding. Some drier, sunnier spells too and feeling warm or hot and humid."

Met Office forecast for Wales this week:

Today:

Cloudy in places through the morning but the cloud soon beginning to break to give long periods of sunshine, making for a very hot day. Dry for many although the chance of shower, possibly heavy and thundery, throughout the day. Maximum temperature 30 °C.

Tonight:

A dry and warm night for many with late sunshine and clear spells. However, there is a chance of some heavy and thundery showers developing in places throughout the night. Minimum temperature 16 °C.

Wednesday:
